BLUE HOUSE (MAVİ KÖŞK) ÇAMLIBEL
BLUE HOUSE, has been built in 1957 by Paulo Paolides who is a Greek of Italian origin. The house is built on 2 stories as 16 sections. Although it was built by the modern architectural technology of 20th C, it shows the characteristics of Italian/Mediterranean as well as Turkish/Greek architectures.
Born in Cyprus, Paolides was a Greek of Italian origin. Although Paolides was a lawyer, he was the biggest gun smuggler in the Middle East. He was also the lawyer of the Archbishop Macario who was the President of Cyprus at the time. He used his profession of lawyer to mask the gun smuggling. That is the reason to build his house in a location that is hardly visible from outside but when inside it has a very wide point of view. In this way the house was able to be used as a gun distribution point.
Art Lover Paolides Paolides, as a keen art lover, has decorated his house with many art objects. He had priceless paintings, trinkets, hand made Persian rugs, liqueur cabinets and his own black and white paintings. He bought some of these artifacts and some were gifts given to him. One of the priceless works in the house is the painting of Virgin Mary. This painting of Virgin Mary was given to him as a present by a French painter in 1971. The reason is not known. It is important that the HALO is made of solid gold and the BOWL and the NECKLACE is made by gilding wash. Another important thing about this painting is that her knees, toes, and eyes are following your gaze whichever direction you move withn the room.
Milk Bath; Paolides had buiilt a milk bath for the use of his lady guests. The milk bath is located right next to the music room, so they were able to relax by listening to music while bathing. Sophia Loren was one of the guests who had bathed in the milk pool.
The Sad End of Paolides; Paolides had to leave his beloved house and escape to Italy during the Peace Operation in 1974. He had used a secret tunnel that was connecting his bedroom to the English quarters. Since he blew up the tunnel during his escape, the end of the tunnel is unknown. He never lost his hope on his house and he kept sending the various needs of the house from Italy until he died in 1986. He was killed in a mafia meeting in Italy.
Finally; Blue House is open to its visitors as a sample object under the guardianship of the Turkish Military Forces. Paolides had lived in luxury making his blood money in this house while the Cypriot Turks were trying to survive between 1963 and 1974. Blue House also has Westinghouse brand of central air conditioning made in 1957, a secret safe that contained a mysterious golden key in it, a 9 dimensional security mirror brought from Far East, stress sofas filled with feather, a liqueur cabinet that is made of chameleon skin that changes color in every season, crystal wine glasses, Italian floor coverings, a lion decorated drinking fountain that can serve wine for 24 hours, private tavern, many spots for religious confession, earthquake alarm, an earthquake survival room that is built separately next to the whole house and it looks totally attached. The site is a must see on the island.
